Saturday Coffee Reads

Every Saturday, if life permits, I spend the morning scouring forums, catching up on longer blog reading, and researching various aspects of EVE while I sip on some coffee and throw down a bagel. Here’s where I share the more interesting findings.

There wasn’t a whole lot of heavy reading to be found this morning, but a few gems nonetheless. If you’ve got a cup of brew in your hand, cheers to the weekend.

  • “I Was a Schizo…” - If you subscribe to the blog pack then you already have this article in your feed, but I wanted to give MrNOXx some props for this great analysis on the nature of avatars, and why we chose who we play. I can’t say everything he states is congruent with my experience—since I’m largely similar to the persona I’ve created for Rettic—but I think he is right in that we allow our characters (whether we deliberately RP or not) to live as exaggerated extensions of ourselves. I’m willing to bet that, deep down, MrNOXx may be more like his character than he gives himself credit for.
  • Erebus Over NYC - Scale is a beautiful aspect of EVE, but sorely understated in gameplay due to the nature of “infiniscroll” with the mouse wheel. Aehric puts the titan in perspective with a clever use of Photoshop and (I presume) Google Earth. (Direct link to pic)
  • Black Prophecy vs. EVE Online - Ok, poorly written article, and I’m not about to get into debates on whether or not BP is an “EVE killer”. I’m sure the comparison is ridiculously frivolous. However, it is definitely interesting to look at the side-by-side graphic comparisons, and the Black Prophecy trailer is certainly mouth-watering (that cockpit view nearly brings a tear to my eye, I’m so jealous). So, if nothing else, just enjoy some sci-fi eye candy.
  • Empyrean Age Political Overview (PDF) - This is an official CCP document outlining the status of each major faction directly after the events of the Empyrean Age. As I’m still reading the novel (review will come when I’m finished), I didn’t let myself get too far in this document since I don’t want to be spoiled. This may be an old doc, but linked anyway for those that may have missed it.
